A hundred billion castaways looking for a home

I wonder how many years we'll have to wait before we can post blog entries like this about the Eheads.

Sinulat ni Bill Simmons:

[It] was like talking to a beautiful girl at a bar for 10 minutes, then having them casually mention their boyfriend out of nowhere, and you feel like you've been punched in the stomach. You know that phenomenon?

Rico leaves

The news is out: Rico Blanco has left Rivermaya. Their gig my friends and I saw a few weeks ago turned out to be their last. Hmm, so that's why he was being indulgent.

It is surprising, because the band has enjoyed much recent success here and abroad. Then again, the band (or perhaps more accurately, Rico Blanco) has seemed to be tapped out creatively, leaving us with a string of annoyingly sappy ballads for their last original releases. Either way, is there really anyone out there who'd be torn up about this? I mean, sure it's Rivermaya, but it's just Rivermaya.

The reason I'm blogging about this is the item in the report that mentioned that the group plans to move on without Rico Blanco, perhaps with a Rockstar INXS-type competition. That could be interesting, but it would just delay the inevitable.

Here's a crazy idea: Rivermaya plays a gig to introduce their new lead vocalist... and it's none other than Bamboo! I know the odds are long, but how much longer can Bamboo carry that band when all their whole original repertoire is shitty? Wouldn't you rather hear him singing Awit ng Kabataan again?

Biyaheng Peyups

A couple of weeks ago, I chanced upon an old microsite over at Peyups.com featuring the Philippine Collegians's 'Dekada 90' special. It was a special issue of the publication which profiled several top alumni of the university who made their mark during the decade, as well as issues that the university faced during the period.

The choices were fascinatingly eclectic and the features, with the benefit of hindsight, quite prescient. The usual suspects were there that one would would associate with Peyups, including Benjie Paras, Raymond Red, Jessica Zafra, the Eraserheads, and Gary Granada were there. Most of the features were also spot-on; for example, it was really cool how an article (accurately) pointed out that the 'white shirt-faded jeans-tsinelas' fashion that Yano frontman Dong Abay wore became the burning image of the typical Iskolar ng Bayan for most non-UP people. The issue also lucked out as some of the people featured, such as then-Representatives Manuel Villar and Mike Defensor and former Governor Nur Misuari have all achieved more prominent status in Philippine politics. Also, it's cool to read all the fawning words about Malou Mangahas, who is my boss over at GMANews.TV.

It made you realize how awesome the 90s were. Ma-re-realize mo rin kung gaano ka-astig maging Iskolar ng Bayan.

Seeing that it's only a couple of years before the end of this decade, I find myself wishing that the Kule would do something similar then. Here are some of my ideas for profiles and issues/events:

- Winnie Monsod
- Loren Legarda
- Chiz Escudero
- Antonio Trillanes IV
- Auraeus Solito
- Jeffrey Jeturian
- Paolo Manalo
- Raymond Palatino

- Edsa Dos
- Tuition fee increase
- Ayala land deal
- RGEP
- UP Centennial

How about you guys, you have anything to add?

A recipe for love

It seems I'm on a roll. Recently, I've set up a couple of friends who are now dating, given relationship advice to a younger officemate, and I helped someone throw the perfect date.

A couple of weeks ago, Urk's buddy GJ came over to ask for Urk and his boyfriend Louie help because he was setting up a surprise candlelit dinner for this girl he was seeing. While they were talking, the two were proving to be quite useless, so I had no choice but to jump in. I told him how to set up the place, what food to serve (from the appetizer to the main course to the dessert), and how to go about the whole date. I also told him how to cook adobo cream pasta, which was to be his secret weapon.

Anyway, I heard from Urk today that the date was an unqualified success, and that the adobo cream pasta was to die for.

So, you want to know how to cook the adobo cream pasta and impress the hell out of your date too?

I would give you the recipe, but really, there is no recipe, just general guidelines. It's really so simple and stupid that it's unbelievable how good it tastes.

  1. Cook adobo
If you don't even know how to cook adobo, well, you probably have no business being in the kitchen in the first place. Ask your mom. The recipe works with both pork and chicken, but pork usually makes for yummier flakes.

  2. Leave the adobo in the fridge for a couple of days
    Old adobo just tastes better.

  3. Toast the flakes
Slice up the adobo with your hands (himayin ang adobo ng inyong kamay). Pan-fry until brown and crispy. Make sure you save the adobo sauce.

  4. Make the sauce
Take the excess oil out. Mix the flakes, the adobo sauce, all-purpose cream, and beef cubes. Simmer for about ten minutes.

Some notes:

You can probably find many other recipes in cookbooks or over the internets, but you can't find anything simpler than this

Boxing with Carolla

Had a lot of fun this afternoon listening to the second installment of Bill Simmons' podcast over at ESPN. His guest for this episode was Adam Carolla, and they kicked things off by talking about last weekend's big fight:

Carolla: "Oscar de la Hoya is an entrepreneur, he is a businessman, and businessmen don't like getting punched in the head, at least from my experience."

Simmons: "You don't think John 'The Beast' Mugabi was an entrepreneur?"

(laughter)

Carolla: "Yeah... no... he's got the words 'The Beast' as his middle name. His parents had to know he was gonna be a boxer."

There's also a funny discussion about action movies, and Adam discussing the funny plot of his new movie, "The Hammer", which has gotten surprisingly good reviews.

Isa kong boto

Here's what my ballot looks like so far:

1. Aquino, Benigno III
2. Bautista, Martin
3. Cayetano, Alan Peter
4. Legarda, Loren
5. Pangilinan, Francis
6. Paredes, Zossimo Jesus
7. Pimentel, Aquilino III
8. Roco, Sonia
9. Sison, Adrian
10. Trillanes, Antonio IV
11. Villar, Manuel Jr.
12. ???

My simple criteria:

» I decided to vote for all the members of Ang Kapatiran, in support of their cause (although I'm not comfortable with some of the things that they stand for).

» I'm not voting for anyone who's supporting this administration.

» I'm not voting for anyone who supported Joseph Estrada during his impeachment trial.

I'm still one candidate short. Hmm... Victor Wood?

As for the party list, I used to vote for Akbayan because their platform is very close to my own principles. This year though, I'm inclined to vote for Kabataan, to support blogger Mong Palatino, the party's no. 1 nominee. Mong was president of the UP University Student Council during Edsa Dos, and was part of the team that coordinated some of the biggest student mobilizations in recent history.

Say that you'll stay a little, don't say bye-bye tonight

If you can't get enough of the NBA Playoffs, I strongly recommend checking out 'The Daily Fix' podcast over at the Basketball Jones. It's the best sports podcast you'll find on the net, and I find myself consistently laughing out loud while listening.

A nice bonus is the cool tunes that they pick for the gaps during each podcast. Last night, after listening to Skeets and Tas talk about the Suns' victory over the Spurs yesterday, the show closed with John Legend's Save Room, which is now my song of the moment.

In Between Days

Had a blast at last Friday's gig. The Sandwich set was pretty standard, but theirs was still the best performance of the night. For my money, Sandwich is the best live band in town. Pupil was ok, but the crowd was dead for most of their sent although everyone did go batshit when they played Pare Ko and Alapaap. Ely seemed bored and was going through the motions. Rivermaya was alright, although Rico Blanco can be annoying when he's going all rock star on us. I mean, I like Rivermaya well enough, but they seem to be too into themselves when performing live.

JAm has all the kwento, with video and pictures. I still can't get Sandwich's In Between Days/Butterfly Carnival medley out of my head ("Go on, go on, just walk away, go on, go on, your choice is made..."), and they have another gig next week at '70 Bistro, this time with Sugarfree. JAm and I will probably watch again (hehe, we're turning into groupies). Time to start up the Dramachine.

Isang tanong sa GMANews.TV

Due to insistent public demand, GMANews.TV has posted Isang Tanong on the web. The clips have been arranged by each segment, and transcripts are also available.

Oh, and watch out for Chavit singing his favorite song.
