Pisay links

Newsbreak has a bunch of stories about Pisay, the best of which deals with the establishment of new campuses under the system despite inadequate funding. Hardest-hit is the budget for faculty salaries:

Then there are teachers’ salaries to consider. Another P35 million is needed for one-year operations and teachers’ salaries. This is so because the system adheres to strict qualifications for teacher applicants and maintains a teacher-student ratio of
1:10.

The current faculty includes some notable names. The Western Visayas Campus prides itself in having the first Asian teacher to receive the Intel Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award—Dr. Josette Biyo, science research teacher—who won the award in 2002 and was consequently honored by astronomers by naming a minor planet after her.

Despite all this, observers say, the inability of PSHS to match the pay rates in other local schools and abroad is taking its toll on the quality of instruction.

“It is difficult to retain the best teachers because the pay is low,” Abad said.

Students at the Philippine Science High School are scholars all through their four years of study. Apart from free tuition, they get free lodging and, depending on their family income, are also given allowances as well.

Many graduates often return the favor by teaching in their alma mater. But they leave eventually. “You cannot feed a family with the kind of salary they pay there,” Lorenzana told NEWSBREAK.

The magazine also goes Dan Brown on us with a piece about the Opus Dei 'invading' the school. I guess the topic is sexy enough, but it's also very sloppily researched. Puro tsismis yung laman.

Finally, there's a feature profiling Pisay graduates after leaving the school, usually for UP. The article points out that Pisay graduates tend to become slackers during college (which is true for the most part), with various experts citing their theories why this is so.

A more interesting point that comes almost as an afterthought in the article is the fact that Pisay people really stick together, maintaining their friendships well after college has ended. So true. Bakit nga ba?

Comments:

kasi taena da best tayo eh. san ka ba makakakita ng grupong limang oras nakatambay sa harap ng casaa at nagpupusoy pagkatapos pag exam na eh top pa rin?

about slackers: yeah, i know somebody like that.

kasi walang ibang tatanggap sa atin. hehe. . . ang labo nga nung article about opus dei. pero sikat si mam chupungco at si sir andres. . . pero tama ba yung iniisip kong si sir andres ay compsci teacher?

geek gravity...

compsci teacher nga si andres, pero i think ma'am andres siya

geek gravity is a nice theory.. though I think it's the pisay humor.. tayo lang nakakagets sa mga joke natin. hehe

wow, mas mababa pala starting sa pisay than in UP, though sabi nila may additional allowance pa...

yung sa eroding secular atmosphere, its quite obvious naman na even during our time. imagine, meron tayong ash wednesday masses, retreats and recollections, even a graduation mass (sorry di ko alam i-spell yung b-word)... i can also imagine OD teachers giving extra credit for attending retreats and stuff... i vaguely remember myself getting pressured to attend to reco's and retreats (though i distinctly remember enjoying the one we had during our senior year in tagaytay...)

kainis lang dun sa article about OD is puro ALLEGE and nobody went against the boss... :D

thanks for posting this jae, i had fun reading it

BTW, si MR. andres is a chem teacher (he wasn't there when we were there) and si MRS. andres ang CS teacher.
