Eat Bulaga's been getting clobbered in the ratings by the competition, and to stop the bleeding, they're bringing back the Sexbomb girls. Say what you want about them, but the show's ratings slide coincided with the girls leaving the show last year. Not only that, but the start of GMA Network's climb to no. 1 in the ratings was jumpstarted by Eat Bulaga's resurgence early in the decade, which in turn coincided by the dance group's debut on the show.
Anyway, Joey de Leon was hyping up Saturday's 'showdown' between the Sexbomb Girls and their replacements, the EB Babes, and one of his throw-away comments made me laugh out loud:
"Sa Sabado, yung mga tao ang judge sa showdown ng Sexbomb at EB Babes. Ngayon, baka magsiksikan yung mga tao, kaya baka sa Luneta na lang namin gawin, kasabay nila Bro. Mike (Velarde of El Shaddai) at Bro. Eddie (Villanueva of Jesus Is Lord). Balita ko kasi, si Bro. Mike, maka-EB Babes pero si Bro. Eddie, solid sa Sexbomb eh."

'Di Mo Lang Alam is my song of the moment. If you've been to places like 70s Bistro or Xaymaca recently, you'd be familiar with the song as it plays over the system during breaks.

Saturday
I actually
had a weekend last weekend, as I spent most of my Saturday at home. After my Saturday morning class, I was able to go grocery shopping, something I had not been able to do so far this year. At home I made beef tapa, the way I want it, the way my family used to do it when I was a kid. I'm not really into the sweet kind that all the tapsilog places sell (except the tapa at Rodic's, it's sweet but I love it). I want my beef tapa savoury and garlicky and with lots of calamansi in the marinade. So I ended up throwing down beef tapa sandwiches (with garlic ranch dressing) all weekend while watching a bunch of movies.
I finally got to watch
Borat, and well, what more could I say that hasn't been said about the movie? I was almost in tears while watching
that scene. Also, while watching the movie, my roommate's boyfriend came in, asked me what I was watching, and said, "Oh. I didn't like that movie." Which I couldn't understand. At all. I mean, how could anyone not
love a movie that contains the line "I had the sexy time with my mother-in-law!" in a faux-Eastern European accent?
Next up was
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, the second installment in Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay's
mediocre man trilogy. I absolutely adored
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and I just love pretty much everything Ferrell has done (yeah, even
A Night at the Roxbury), so liking
Talladega was pretty much a given. My favorite little details about this movie? Ricky Bobby named his two sons Walker and Texas Ranger.
I was all comedied out after that, so I went with
Match Point, Woody Allen's brilliant tale about society and infidelity. It's different from your "typical" Woody Allen film, in that there are no awkward, neurotic characters saying witty one-liners, and Allen stays behind the camera. But it's typical Allen in that it's full of flawed people whose imperfections drive the film.
The movie itself is hard to describe, but my best try is this: it's a modern-day Jane Austen that turns into Fyodor Dostoyevsky. But with a lucky twist.
Also, Scarlett Johansson has never been sexier, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers reminds me a lot of Beaver from
Veronica Mars, and if you see the movie and the second season of the show, you'd know what I'm getting at.
The last movie I saw was the
Little Miss Sunshine, which turned out to be my favorite movie in a long while, probably since
Sideways. It's funny, sweet, heartbreaking, poignant, cruel, honest, sly and smart, sometimes all at the same time. But more than all that, the film, through each of its characters, evokes genuine empathy, something that is in short supply these days. I was still smiling this morning at the shower while thinking about some of the scenes from the movie.
My weekend was wonderful. How was yours?

I'm a huge fan of the Eraserheads, they're probably my favorite band of all time, and I even named my personal blog after their debut album (ultraelectromagneticpop), so it was a shock to me to hear about Ely Buendia's heart attack earlier this week.
I'm glad that he's ok, and it's pretty cool that GMANews.TV has been on top of the story all week. Already, we've filed
five stories and five videos about the incident. I even got to use on of the cool new features of the site, which enables a user to get the latest updates on a search via RSS. You can get all the latest updates on Ely through your RSS reader by adding
this feed to your list.
The biggest scoop out of the reports came from last night's
Chika Minute video, where Ely's wife Dianne thanked Ely's colleagues who have expressed support for the Pupil front man. The first name on the list was Buddy Zabala, the E-heads bass player and the best friend of E-heads drummer Raimund Marasigan, the Sandwich front man with whom Ely had a falling out before the Eraserheads broke up.
Everyone, including rap icon Francis M., has started calling for
an Eraserheads reunion. Raimund hasn't said a word on the issue on the Sandwich mailing list, although I'd be watching Sandwich's guest spot on Eat Bulaga this Saturday hoping that he'd give at least a shout-out to his former comrade.
Anyway, while we're waiting, I'd like to share an Eraserheads track from the (out-of-print) album "Natin99" which showcases the band in all their psychedelic glory. Rumors float around at the time that the relationships of the members got so bad during the recording that they couldn't stand being in the studio together, so they just recorded their parts on their own and 'cut-and-paste' the bits later. The song itself distinct vocal parts from both Ely and Raimund, and ironically, starts off with a message of peace:
We can if we wanted to
Let's start with me and you
Both of us together
Basag, ipag-dikit-dikit
Pusong punit-punit
We gotta peace it togetherEraserheads - Peace It TogetherLabels: eraserheads, music, work
