Pisay the (award-winning) movie

The Entertainment Press Society or ENPRESS, Inc. has announced the winners to this year's 5th Golden Screen Awards (GSA). The awards night will be held on June 24, Tuesday, at Zirkoh Greenhills at 8 p.m. The final voting of the winners was held Saturday, June 14, at Music 21 KTV Bar on Timog Avenue after a marathon deliberation that took seven hours.

Pisay, an indie film about eight exceptionally gifted high school students set in the politically volatile ‘80s, dominated the 5th Golden Screen Awards by winning 8 trophies, including Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Director for Auraeus Solito.

The film also won Best Original Screenplay for Henry Grajeda.

Magic

We were in Tagaytay this weekend for Paul and Jona's wedding. Of course weddings are already generally happy occasions, but it was awesome because there were a lot of us Pisay people present. Mimi and Karl also did the photography, with ample assistance from Markku, so there were familiar faces all around.

We arrived late for the wedding (it was Leks's fault). We got in as the ceremony was ending and it was time to take photos. At least we made it to the photos.

Apart from everything else, I liked the music choices they went with. The bride and groom are big fans of Ben Folds, and the Folds ballad The Luckiest played as soon as the ceremony was over. They also used Such Great Heights for an audio-visual presentation later that evening. I think I also heard The Cure's In Between Days during the introduction by the entourage, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I was listening to The Luckiest this morning, and it's really a sweet, smart love song. For most of the song, the narrator stumbles through awkward phrases and lines, for which he finally apologizes, and explains away the mediocre effort by saying I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you. Pang-balentayms talaga ;)

Afterwards, I ended up playing Magic, another Ben Folds Five ballad. I once thought it was a love song, but it was really about a loved one who has been battling a fatal illness before finally succumbing. The narrator takes comfort with the fact that the loved one is not really gone, but is now the magic that holds the sky up from the ground.

Pisay

Have you guys seen Pisay yet? I saw it last Tuesday with the usual suspects (JAm, Jem, Leks, Jonas, and Chewy; Mark and Hannah were also at the screening but they arrived late). I didn't really want to write extensively about it because there's just no way to do justice to the experience of what Howie Severino calls a 'cinematic love letter to a school'. He gave the film a rave review.

Auraeus and direk Laurice Guillen were right: This may be the first movie that portrays modern Filipino youth as being as brilliant as Rizal had envisioned more than a century ago.

Perhaps the most popular Pisay alum, Jessica Zafra, also liked the movie (in a post with a title that any Pisay kid should get):

Auraeus Solito has three strengths as a filmmaker. One, he draws fine performances from his actors, even those who had no previous acting experience. Two, he can tell a story visually, unlike many Pinoy filmmakers whose movies look like radio drama serials. Three, he knows his strong points, so his confidence is evident even in scenes that might seem problematic. These strengths are on display in his third feature film, Pisay, the intertwined stories of six scholars at the Philippine Science High School in the ’80s.

The film will be screened at UP on July 31, 5PM. I think there will be additional screenings if the film were to win awards in tomorrow night's awarding ceremonies for the Cinemalaya festival. The PSHSAA and the PSHS Foundation will also be sponsoring screenings of the film at The Block on August 24 and 25.
